Varsity Wrestling Finishes Runner Up at 22 Team Tournament in Williamston

On Saturday, Jan. 21st the boys varsity wrestling team traveled to Williamston for a 22 team individual tournament.  The team placed 2nd overall with five finalists and two champions.  Allendale won the tournament followed by Clinton, Fowlerville 3rd, Yale 4th, New Boston Huron 5th, Gaylord 6th, and Williamston 7th.  Connor Busz won the tournament championship at 120 pounds and raised his overall record to 27-1.  Busz defeated Jason Downs of New Boston Huron 4-2 in the finals.  After receiving a first round bye, Connor picked up a 16-6 major decision and a pin in just 23 seconds in the semi finals.  Even more impressive than the championship was Busz earning his 150th career win.  The other champion on the day was junior Connor Younts winning the 126 pound title.  Younts defeated Levi Baker of Fowlerville  5-0 in the finals.  Younts also received a first round bye before earning a first period pin in the quarter finals and a 19-3 technical fall in the semi finals. Younts eclipsed a milestone of his own by earning his 100th career win as a junior.  Both are very impressive displays for each of these wrestlers' illustrious careers at Clinton.  Younts took his season record to 27-2 on the year.  Sophomore Braylon Long finished as runner up after he earned a 21-5 technical fall in the quarter finals and a 15-4 major decision in the semi finals, before dropping a 1-4 decision in the finals.  Long stretched his record to 24-4 on the season.  Nate Arntz competed at 106 pounds and picked up an opening round pin before dropping his next two and falling short of placing.  Zak Shadley finished as runner up at 132 pounds after earning 5-3 and 5-0 decisions on his way to the finals after a first round bye.  In the finals Shadley fell to Dalton Daniel 2-6.  Maurice Ames competed at 138 pounds and finished as runner up.  Maurice picked up pins in the opening round and in the semi finals.  He earned a 17-2 technical fall in the quarter finals. At 144 pounds Clifford Jones battled during the day after losing his opening match, he came back and picked up an 8-0 major decision before dropping his final match 6-8.  Ethan Younts competed at 150 pounds and came away with a well earned 3rd place finish on the day.  Ethan opened the tournament with a pin, followed by a 3-2 win in the quarter finals.  In the semi finals he dropped a 1-9 match to the eventual champion.  In the match for 3rd he picked up a 3-0 win over Gus James of Gaylord.  At 157 pounds Bryce Randolph placed 3rd overall and picked up some good wins along the way.  Bryce picked up two pins in his first two matches, but dropped his semi finals match to Tyler Schofield of Olivet.  But bounced back to defeat Landen Parker of Eaton Rapids in overtime 8-6.  Wyatt Hicks competed at 215 pounds and opened the tournament with a pin, but dropped his next two matches.  Hamza Rafferty competed at heavyweight, but failed to place.  

On Wednesday, Jan. 25th Clinton will host Hillsdale in their final home LCAA match of the year.  The seniors will be honored before the meet that starts at 5:30.  The Clinton Youth Wrestling Club and the Middle School Wrestling Team will be recognized as well during the meet.   

 

On Friday, Jan. 27th Adrian College will host the Lenawee County Meet at the Merillat Center starting at 5pm.  

 

On Friday Jan. 20th the Girls Wrestling Team traveled to Birmingham Groves High School for an individual tournament and came away with three placers.  Leanne Mercier placed 2nd at 155 after earning a bye in round one and a pin in the next round over Kyra Nickerson of Waterford Kettering, before falling to Brynne Green of Howell in the finals.  Michelle Arntz placed 4th overall at 110 pounds after picking up a pin over Monica Samano of Sterling Heights.  Michelle dropped her next match 7-12 to Dominique Lehman of Clio.  Then dropped an overtime match to Grace Pontzious of Utica Eisenhower.  Raven Aldridge competed at 135 pounds and picked up a bye first round and a first period pin in the quarter finals.  But unfortunately was injured in the semi finals and had to default to fourth place.  Gabbi Pearce competed at 125 pounds and fell short of placing.  Kierra Fivenson competed at 145 pounds and placed 5th overall with a 5-0 win over Kaitlyn Cain of Shrine Catholic.  The girls team will travel to Holt on Saturday, Jan. 28th for an individual tournament.  The Boys JV Team will travel to Fenton HS for an individual tournament on Saturday, Jan. 28th as well.
