Varsity Wrestling Earns 7th Straight Regional Championship

The varsity wrestling team traveled to Napoleon High School for the MHSAA Team Regional Championships on Wednesday, Feb. 15th.  In the first match of the night Clinton competed against Laingsburg in the Regional Semi Final.  Clinton Defeated Laingsburg in dominant fashion 63-18 to advance to the Regional Championship against Napoleon.  Napoleon defeated Quincy in the other Regional Semi Final.  

In the opening match of the Regional Semi Final Maurice Ames got the teams started with an opening pin at 144 pounds.  Clifford Jones dropped his match at 150 pounds and tied the score up at 6-6.  Ethan Younts then picked up a pin at 157 to put the Redwolves on top for good.  Bryce Randolph then defeated his opponent 7-0 to up the score to Clinton 15 Laingsburg 6.  At 175 pounds Landon Lakatos was pinned before the Redwolves gave up a forfeit at 190 pounds.  Wyatt Hicks got the Redwolves back on the board with a pin at 215 pounds.  Hamza Rafferty followed that up by taking a forfeit at heavyweight.  Nate Arntz picked up a first period pin in just 36 seconds to put Clinton up 33-18.  Braylon Long picked up a win at 113 pounds, before Clinton closed the dual with four straight pins from 120-138 pounds.  Brenden Benschoter started win a pin at 120, followed by Connor Busz at 126, then Connor Younts at 132, and finishing with Zak Shadley at 138 pounds.  Making the finals score Clinton 63 Laingsburg 18 and advancing the Redwolves to the Regional Championship match.  

In the finals Clinton wrestled host Napoleon and dismantled the Pirates 65-10.  Clifford Jones got the team going with a pin at 150 pounds.  Ethan Younts followed that up by defeated Mason Roth 4-3 in a huge momentum win for our team.  At 165 pounds Bryce Randolph defeated Zack Bamm 8-0 in a major decision.  Landon Lakatos competed at 175 pounds and lost 2-12, but his heart and battle for the team was awesome.  He was able to fight off, and save the team some points and helped increase our teams momentum.  After Clinton gave up a forfeit at 190 pounds, Wyatt Hicks picked up his second pin on the night at 215 pounds.  At heavyweight Hamza Rafferty grabbed a second period pin to make the score Clinton 25 Napoleon 10.  Nate Arntz picked up a win at 106, then Braylon Long won 11-0 with a major decision.  Brenden Benschoter picked up a first period pin at 120 pounds, followed by Connor Busz grabbing a pin at 126 pounds.  Connor Younts picked up yet another pin at 132 pounds.  Finishing the dual up were pins by Zak Shadley at 138 pounds and another pin by Maurice Ames at 144 pounds.  Clinton now advances to the state quarterfinals at Kalamazoo's K Wings Stadium on Friday, Feb. 24th at 4:30pm.  Clinton is the fourth seed and will wrestle the fifth seed, Constantine in the opening round.  With a win in the quarterfinals Clinton will wrestle in the Final Four at 12pm on Saturday, Feb. 25th.  We are looking forward to the opportunity to compete at the highest level with our young team.  This Regional Championship marks the 7th in a row for the wrestling program and 8th in the last 10 years.  Thank you for the continued support.
