The Clinton Wrestling Team won its seventh straight Regional Championship and competed in the MHSAA Team State Championships held at Kalamazoo's K Wings Stadium.  Clinton ended up seeded fourth overall and wrestled the fifth seed Constantine in the State Quarter Finals.  Clinton lost the toss at the beginning of the match and Constantine chose to have the even matches.  After the random draw for starting weight class was done the match started at 120 pounds.  After losing the toss (coin flip) Clinton had to send its wrestlers out first for the odd matches.  Clinton started with freshman Brenden Benschoter against Preston Like at 120 pounds.  Benschoter was able to secure the first takedown and go up 2-0 in the first period.  By the end of the first period his opponent got a reversal to tie the score up at 2-2 going into the second period.  In the second period Benschoter chose the down position and gave up two nearfall points before earning an escape.  Going into the third period the score was 3-4, with Benschoter down by a point in a great match.  In the third period Brenden gave up an escape and takedown, and was pinned towards the end of the third period in a hard fought contest.  Benschoter finished his freshman year with 20 varsity wins and a great start to his high school career.  At 126 pounds senior Connor Busz stepped in and earned a 6-3 win over a wrestler with only two losses prior to the match.  Busz gave up the first takedown and earned a quick escape, and that is how the first period ended with Busz down 1-2 going into the second period.  Busz was in the top position to start the second period and earned three nearfall points and almost pinning his opponent. His opponent Bear Greibe earned an escape and Busz quickly got a takedown of his own.  Going into the third period up 6-3, that is how the match would end as the entire third period was scoreless for either wrestler.  Team score was Clinton 3 Constantine 6 after two matches.  Connor Younts bummed up to 132 pounds and competed against Collin Featherstone.  Connor picked up the opening takedown and after an escape, Younts picked up yet another takedown.  Going into the second period Younts was up 4-1.  After choosing down Connor earned a reversal, making the score 6-1 Younts.  With his opponent getting an escape Connor picked up his third takedown of the match to make the match score 8-2 going into the third period.  In the third period his opponent chose down and earned an escaped only for Younts to get another takedown.  Late in the match his opponent earned a reversal to finish the match with Younts winning 11-7.  Team Score Clinton 6 Constantine 6.  Senior Zak Shadley competed at 138 in what would be the last match of his high school career to earn a dominate 14-0 major decision for the Redwolves.  Zak racked up the points with a takedown and two sets of nearfall points in the first period.  At the start of the second period Zak was up 7-0.  Shadley picked up another set of two nearfall points and entered the third period up 9-0.  Zak chose bottom in the third period and earned an escape, before getting another takedown and two more nearfall points to finish the match.  Team Score Clinton 10 Constantine 6.  Maurice Ames bumped up to 144 pounds and came out on fire.  He grabbed a takedown, three nearfall points, and Clinton's first pin of the dual.  Team score Clinton 16 Constantine 6.  Freshman Clifford Jones stepped in at 150 pounds for the Redwolves and suffered a tough loss by pin in the first period.  Team score Clinton 16 Constantine 12.  Senior Ethan Younts picked up a dominate 12-0 major decision win at 157 pounds.  Ethan started the match with a takedown and a set of three nearfall points to enter the second period up 5-0 over Carter Godfrey.  Ethan chose down and earned an escape and another takedown to go into the third period up 8-0.  In the third period his opponent gave up a penalty point for stalling and Ethan was able to get another turn for three more nearfall points.  That would end the scoring with Ethan earning the major decision and four more team points.  Team Score Clinton 20 Constantine 12.  Freshman Bryce Randolph competed at 165 pounds against Daxton Smith.  After a scoreless first period Randolph was able to get a reversal after choosing down in the second period.  Going into the third period Bryce was up 2-0.  His opponent chose down and gave up a penalty point for stalling and that would end the match scoring with Randolph winning 3-0.  Team score Clinton 23 Constantine 12.  Freshman Landon Lakatos stepped on the stage at 175 pounds and lost a tough match by pin, but battled for us.  Team score Clinton 23 Constantine 18.  At this point Clinton had won 6 matches to Constantine's 3 wins.  Clinton has forfeited 190 pounds all season due to an early season injury and some confusion happened where the wrong wrestler from Clinton checked in at 190 pounds.  Due to the flip, it was Constantine's turn to send first at 190 pounds.  While adding up match scenarios' and waiting for the officials to ask for our wrestler at 190 after Constantine checked in, where going to give the forfeit signal.  Instead the wrong wrestler was sent out with out coaches in the corner realizing it until they had already checked in.  Clinton coaches stopped the officials before the match started but due to the wrong wrestler checking in at the head table across the mat, Clinton had to forfeit the match and lost to Constantine in the state quarterfinals.  The official score of the match was 1-0 Constantine.  This was heartbreaking to everyone involved and this is on us as coaches and no one else.  This mistake does not define our great season of significance.  Clinton finished with a 19-5 overall record, won their 9th district title in 10 years, and 7th Regional Title in 10 years.  The program grew with great development throughout the year and saw several wrestlers step up for the team all year long.  We are very proud of the effort and attitude that we received everyday throughout the entire season.  We are looking forward to planning off season work through Freestyle and Greco Roman training at Clinton High School and going to team camp together.  What a great year.  Thank you for the support throughout the year.
