Wrestling Wins Spartan Classic Tournament

On Saturday, Jan. 6th Clinton traveled to Warren Fitzgerald for the Spartan Classic 16 Team Individual Wrestling Tournament.  Clinton won the tournament championship by scoring 276 points on the day.  The runner up team was Troy with 155 points, followed by U of D Jesuit with 136.5 points. Clinton put 10 in the finals going for first with 7 champions, 3 runner ups and a third place finisher on the day.  Nate Arntz finished in 2nd place at 106 pounds after collecting two pins on his way to the finals.  Zach Taylor placed 2nd at 113 pounds by earning two pins of his own and lost a tough match 12-14 in sudden victory overtime.  Joe Hodges earned three pins on the day at 120 pounds, but lost his semi finals match. Joe bounced back and took the next best thing in 3rd place.  Connor Younts earned two pins and a technical fall enroute to his championship at 132 pounds.  Maurice Ames  took second place at 138 pounds after collecting two pins before the finals.  In a wild, action packed match Ames lost to a division one state runner up in a close match.  At 144 pounds Dylan Badge won his first varsity championship with three pins on his way to the finals.  In the finals Dylan won on a late takedown to win 11-9.  Cliff Jones picked up his first varsity championship as well by winning the 150 pounds title winning matches, 9-1. 4-1, and 8-5 on his way.  Freshman Owen Wright stepped into his first varsity individual tournament of the year and battled, but fell short of placing.  At 165 pounds Bryce Randolph earned a pin, a major decision win 9-1, and a technical fall 21-6 in the finals to win the tournament championship.  After the tournament Randolph was voted by the head coaches as the upper weight tournament most valuable wrestler.  At 175 pounds Landon Lakatos lost his first match 6-8 before pinning his next opponent.  Landon then lost a tough 2-3 decision to end his day.  John Keibler also competed at 175 pounds losing a close 8-10 decision to a finalist and dropping his next match and falling short of placing.  Wyatt Hicks won the 215 pounds championship after picking up two pins in a row, he battled to win 5-4 in the semi finals and push himself into the finals.  In the finals Wyatt came from behind 0-2 to pick up a late pin and win the tournament title. At heavyweight Hamza Rafferty earned three pins on the day to win another tournament championship for the Redwolves.  It was a great day with different competition than we have seen all year.  We have great support at the tournament and we look forward to traveling to Perry High School on Wednesday and to Traverse City on Friday.  In other action this week we will be sending a group to Dansville for another varsity individual tournament and our girls will travel to Fowlerville Friday night for a girls tournament.
