Wrestling wins 9th Straight District Title

On Wednesday, Feb. 7th the Clinton Redwolves won their 9th straight District Championship at home in front of a large crowd.  In the district semi finals Clinton took on Onsted and won 62-15.  The match started at 215 pounds as senior Wyatt Hicks started the dual off with a pin in :38.  Hamza Rafferty stepped in at heavyweight and picked up a pin in 1:28.  Nate Arntz competed at 106 pounds and picked up a second period pin in :42.  Zach Taylor picked up our fourth pin in a row in 3:25 at 113 pounds.  Joe Hodges dropped his match at 120 pounds 1-7.  At 126 pounds Braylon Long picked up a 15-0 technical fall for the Redwolves.  Senior Connor Younts picked up the fastest pin of the night at 132 pounds in just 15 seconds.  At 138 pounds Maurice Ames followed that up with a pin of his own in 1:21.   Senior Dylan Badge won a hard fought match 3-2 at 144 pounds.  Sophomore Cliff Jones picked up a pin at 150 pounds in 2:35.  At 157 pounds Shane Cook lost his match by pin.  Bryce Randolph picked up a pin at 165 pounds in 38 seconds, followed by Landon Lakatos's pin at 175 pounds in 48 seconds. Will Hawkins dropped his match by pin at 190 pounds to close out the dual.  In the other semi final Madison defeated Blissfield to set up the District Championship match between Clinton and Madison.  

Clinton came in ranked 4th in the state in division 3, while Madison has been in the top 10 rankings on and off throughout the year.  The match started at heavyweight where Hamza Rafferty got a huge first period pin to make the Clinton crowd erupt.  Rafferty had lost twice to his opponent this season so this win was a good one for the Redwolves.  Nate Arntz got the initial takedown at 106 and was putting his opponent on his back and made a mistake to get rolled to his back and pinned.  Zach Taylor lost by tech. fall at 113, and Joe Hodges was pinned at 120 pounds.  Braylon Long started getting the momentum back for Clinton with an 11-2 major decision to make the score Clinton 10 Madison 17.  Connor Younts picked up a pin at 132 pounds and brought Clinton within a point, Clinton 16 Madison 17.  Maurice Ames picked up another win against an opponent who had previously defeated him with a 9-8 decision.  Clinton went back on top 19-17.  Dylan Badge picked up a huge pin for the team at 144 pounds to continue the momentum in Clinton's favor.  Cliff Jones stepped in at 150 pounds and picked up a second period fall for the Redwolves.  Sophomore Tanner Bolton picked up a huge win for the Redwolves at 157 pounds with a 7-4 win.  Bolton, after missing most of the season after having surgery from a football injury, came up big for his team.  John Keibler then stepped in at 165 pounds and picked up another Clinton pin.  Clinton 10 Madison 16 after Madison was deducted a team point at 157 pounds.  Bryce Randolph took on another ranked opponent at 175 pounds and came away with a 7-2 win.  Will Hawkins picked up a pin in 1:09 at 190 pounds and Wyatt Hicks closed the dual with his second pin of the night in just 37 seconds.  Clinton won 55-16 over Madison to claim the district championship.  Clinton will move on to the MHSAA Team Regional at Williamston High School on Wednesday, Feb. 14th at 5:30pm.  Clinton will wrestle Williamston in the Regional Semi Final.  The other Regional Semi Final will be Eaton Rapids and Napoleon.   The winner of each regional semi final will wrestle for a Regional Championship and an opportunity to go to the Elite Eight Team State Championship at Kalamazoo's K Wings Stadium on Friday, Feb. 23rd at 4:30pm.  Semi finals will be Saturday, Feb. 24th at Noon, with the finals at 3:45pm.  The Redwolves are looking forward to a great crowd during their postseason run.
