On Sunday, Feb. 9th the girls wrestling team competed in the first ever MHSAA District Championships at Dundee High School. In the past the girls only had a regional tournament to qualify for the state championships.  But now girls wrestling has grown so much that the need to add a district championship for this year.  Now the girls have the exact path and tournament sequence as the boys to earn their way to the state tournament.   Clinton enter six girls into the district championship, all knowing that they had to place in the top four to qualify for the MHSAA Individual Regionals at Chelsea on Sunday, Feb. 16th.  First up was Autumn Gibson as she picked up a second period pin at 130 pounds to start her tournament.  Autumn is a first year wrestler that learned and improved the entire season.  Gibson battled hard in her next two matches, but fell just short of qualifying for regionals.  There is a lot promise for next year and this freshman had a great season.  Next up was freshman Mollie Clark who competed hard at Hwt.  She was all effort on Sunday and came off the mat physically exhausted and we could be more proud of her efforts.  She lost her second match on a last second reversal to lose 0-2. and just missed qualifying for regionals.  Kierra Fivenson competed at 155 pounds and after starting with the opening takedown and nearfall points, she dropped a heart breaking first match.  In her next match it just wasn't in the cards on this day as she fell short of qualifying for regionals.  Her effort was commendable and we look forward to next year.  At 140 pounds sophomore Annabelle Howard started her day by picking up a pin against her opponent.  She picked up two takedowns, a reversal, and some nearfall points before the pin.  Annabelle lost her next match to the eventual champion.  But she battled back in a big way overcoming previous losses to defeat an opponent she hadn't defeated in her two years of high school competition.  Annabelle defeated her opponent from Columbia Central 1-0 but wrestling fundamentally sound and staying in better position than her opponent and it paid off.  In her match for third Annabelle went down 0-7 after getting thrown to her back in a headlock that she knew was coming.  But to her credit she fought off and in the second period it was a different wrestler.  Annabelle started on bottom and picked up the reversal and nearfall on her way to a pin and a third place finish as she qualified for regionals.  Freshman Khloie Miller competed at 115 pounds and picked up a second period pin in her opening match to move onto the semi finals.  In the semi's Khloie won a back and forth match 13-9 with some nearfall points in the third period to secure the victory and propel her into the finals.  Khloie finished as the runner up after dropping her finals match as she qualified for regionals as well. Raven Aldridge is our lone senior and our captain.  She started her day with a pin at 170 pounds to secure her 100th career win.  This is the first female wrestler in school history to obtain 100 wins in a career.  This is a major accomplishment and should be celebrated.  Raven collected another pin in the semifinal match to move into the finals.  In the finals Raven won by receiving a medical forfeit win as her opponent was injured in the match before.  Raven becomes Clinton's first District Champion and first girl to reach 100 wins.  Congratulations to Raven and to the rest of the girls.
